Conformity vs obedience: the difference exams actually test
Both are social influence, and students lose marks on them every year for the same reason: the question describes a situation and you have to name which one it is. Here is the test that decides it in one line.

These two turn up in every psychology paper and they are the pair students most often swap. The reason is structural: questions rarely ask you to define them. They describe a scenario and expect you to name the process. So the definition alone will not save you, because both definitions sound similar until you have to apply one.
There is a single question that separates them, and it works on almost every item you will meet.
Conformity: pressure you feel, not pressure you are told
Conformity is adjusting your behaviour or opinion to match a group. Nobody demands it. The group simply behaves a certain way and you fall in with it, sometimes without noticing you have.
Asch's line study is the standard example. Participants sat with people they believed were fellow volunteers and judged which of three lines matched a reference line. The answer was obvious. The others, who were working with the experimenter, confidently gave the wrong one. Around a third of responses went along with the group, and roughly three quarters of participants conformed at least once.
Nobody told those participants what to say. That absence of an instruction is the whole point, and it is what makes the study conformity rather than obedience.
Two reasons people conform
Papers frequently ask which type of influence is at work, so this pair is worth knowing as precisely as the main distinction.

Asch is normative: the line lengths were unambiguous, so participants knew the group was wrong and agreed anyway. Sherif's autokinetic study, where a stationary point of light appears to move in a dark room, is informational: the task had no correct answer, so people used each other as evidence.
Obedience: someone with standing told you to
Obedience is compliance with a direct order from a person perceived as having legitimate authority. The relationship runs vertically rather than sideways, and the request is explicit.
Milgram's study is the example every syllabus uses. Participants were instructed to deliver what they believed were increasingly severe electric shocks to another person. When they hesitated, the experimenter answered with prompts such as “the experiment requires that you continue”. Around 65% went to the maximum voltage.
The detail that earns marks is what changed the rate. Obedience fell when the authority gave instructions by telephone rather than in person, when the study moved out of Yale into a run-down office, and when the participant could see or touch the person being shocked. It rose when the authority appeared legitimate and when demands escalated gradually instead of starting severe.
Compliance, and why it is a third thing
Some papers add compliance, which is agreeing to a direct request from someone who has no authority over you. A colleague asking you to swap shifts is compliance. Your manager telling you to swap is obedience. A team where everyone has already swapped, so you do too, is conformity.

Test yourself
A new nurse notices that everyone on her ward skips a particular checklist step. Nobody mentions it to her. Within a fortnight she has stopped doing it too. This is best described as:
- Obedience, because the hospital hierarchy pressured her

Nobody instructed her. She changed her behaviour after observing what her colleagues did, which is conformity. The hospital hierarchy sits in the question to make obedience tempting, but no order was ever given, and without an order obedience is off the table.
If that felt straightforward, the exam version will not be. Real questions bury the distinction inside a scenario with a plausible authority figure standing nearby doing nothing, or a group that happens to include a supervisor. Working through a run of them is the only reliable way to make the judgement automatic.

- What is the main difference between conformity and obedience?
- Conformity is changing your behaviour to match a group when nobody has told you to. Obedience is following a direct instruction from someone with authority. If no order was given, it is not obedience.
- Is Asch conformity or obedience?
- Conformity. Asch's participants heard other people give an obviously wrong answer about line lengths and went along with it. Nobody instructed them to agree, which is exactly what makes it conformity.
- Is Milgram conformity or obedience?
- Obedience. An experimenter in a lab coat told participants to continue administering shocks. The pressure came from an instruction by a perceived authority, not from a group of peers.
- Can a situation be both?
- Yes, and exam questions exploit it. Zimbardo's prison study involved obedience to the assigned role and conformity to what the other guards were doing. When a question mixes them, look at who applied the pressure: a peer group, or a person with authority.
